The narrow front and rear lights developed by the company ZKW in Wesselburg are very special. At the front, dark, high-resolution LED headlights blend harmoniously into the front end of the BMW XM. At the rear of this powerful SUV, BMW has used all-round, narrow, full-LED lights with independent controls. "In addition to the BMW X7, the BMW XM is also the BMW Group's first rear light project. We are very proud to be able to apply our innovative lighting solutions to these high-end models," said Dr. Wilhelm Steger, CEO of the ZKW Group.
This unique project presented ZKW engineers with significant challenges. Due to the low overall height of the headlights, a special light guidance concept had to be developed. "The development of the main headlight posed a special challenge for the BMW design team and ZKW. It had to be as narrow as possible to emphasize the unique design of the vehicle," explains ZKW Project Manager Wolfgang Zeidlhofer. The split headlights developed by ZKW use two high-resolution LED modules and integrate the main headlights with dipped and high beams, as well as daytime running lights with LED guide lights for position lights, direction lights Indicators and side markers (US version).
Design and production to the highest standards
When developing the front and rear lights for the BMW XM, not only was technical perfection required within the smallest installation space, but also maximum dimensional accuracy and small gaps were required. The adjustment system of the combined taillight assembly is very unique and the gaps between the different lighting functions are particularly small. However, the limited installation space of the headlight bumper also posed a huge challenge to the development team in Weisselberg, but they successfully solved this problem with a space-saving design. BMW XM headlights are produced at ZKW's multiple plants around the world.
